ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS(Japanese version)

-Blending Sound Sources, Sound Fields, and Listeners-

Ando, Y., Sato, S. and Sakai, H., Springer-Verlag, Tokyo, 2000

Computational Acoustics in Architecture

Ando, Y., Sato, S., and Sakai, H., WIT Press, 1999

Chap.4 Fundamental subjective attributes of sound fields based on the model of auditory-brain system.(P.63-99), Ed. Sendra, J.J.

This book discusses new computational methods and processes in relation to architectural acoustics. Chap.4 describes fundamental subjective attributes of sound fields from the model of the human auditory-brain system. The model consists of the autocorrelators and crosscorrelator for signals arriving at two ear entrances, and specializations of both human cerebral hemispheres. Primary sensations such as pitch, loudness and timbre are first discussed. Then typical fundamental attributes of sound fields, including the apparent source width (ASW) and speech intelligibility, are described in terms of the spatial factors extracted from the interaural crosscorrelation function, and the temporal factors extracted from the autocorrelation function, respectively.

ARCHITECTURAL ACOUSTICS

-Blending Sound Sources, Sound Fields, and Listeners-

Ando Y., AIP PRESS/Springer-Verlag, New York, 1998

From basic theory to design concert and multiple-purpose halls, this book explores the orthogonality of physical factors that determine psychological responses of the audience. The author clearly describes the relationship between the physical factors of sound fields and the functions of human brain processing. The seat selection system to fit the individual preference is also proposed by testing physical attributes at any seat in a proposed hall. This book is useful for everyone who is engaged in the environmental planning as well as acouticians, aiming at the fusion of art and science.

Music & Concert Hall Acoustic

Conference Proceedings from MCHA 1995

Ando, Y. & Noson, D. Eds., Academic Press, London,1997

In May 1995, Music and Concert Hall Acoustics (MCHA95) convened for four days in the main hall of the newly opened Kirishima International Concert Hall, designed by the well-known architect Fumihiko Maki and featuring an innovative acoustical design by Yoichi Ando. From the first paper by the hall's architect, to the last, by musician and conductor Jurgen Meyer, the interdisciplinary theme of the symposium was woven from the many strands of research and observation in physical acoustics, psycho-musicology, architectural design and engineering, auditory psychology, and musical performance. What can be discovered and admired here in the selected Proceedings papers is a view of concert hall design which promotes the fusion of art and science. (pp. 433)

Hillside Residence Plan

Ando, Y. et al., Architectural Institue of Japan Ed., Gihoudou, 1995

2.1 (P.33-40), Appendix (P.295-304)

This book aims at a radical improvement of the residential environment so as to make it superior for human sensibilities. Considering the specialization of cerebral hemispheres of human brain, temporal and spatial parameters, which are associated with left and right hemisphere respectively, deeply relate to designing the superior residential environment.
In this book, against an uniform development of the hillside, the organization of the residential space for the next generation are proposed to make the best use of the native natural environment.

The Nature and Technology of Acoustic Space

Tohyama, M., Suzuki, H. & Ando, Y., Academic Press, London, 1995

Chap.5 Subjective and Physiological Responses to Sound Fields (P.151-193), Chap.7-4 A Design Study for Concert Halls (P.292-302)

This book discusses the acoustics and vibration theories within the framework of modern communication and information science and is, therefore, suitable as a textbook for such postgraduate university courses.
It describes the latest application of technologies related to various acoustic spaces founded by modern acoustic theories. Signal analysis, sound field visualization, signal processing, sound field control for communication space, and new statistical theory of room transfer functions are introduced to readers using new experimental data. Sound fields design methods for concert halls based on subjective attributes and physiological backgrounds are described in detail. Concert hall acoustics and sound field reproduction are also important for acoustic virtual reality technologies and the reader will gain up-to-date knowledge about the wide variety of acoustic theories, technologies and their new application areas. The exercise given in this text will be solid foundation for future work. it will also be of use for newcomers to the various acoustic research fields.

McGraw-Hill Yearbook of Science and Technology 1991

McGraw-Hill, New York, 1990

"Architectural Acoustics" (P.26-29), S.P.Parker Ed.

This book introduces the representative fruits of science and technology in 1990. In architectural acoustics, optimal conditions of four physical factors of sound fields are clarified to maximize subjective preference. Besides, methods of calculating scale values of subjective preference at each seat in a hall and the examples are shown.

Concert Hall Acoustics

Ando, Y., Springer-Verlag, New York, 1985

A series of researches on concert hall acoustics is put together. To realize auditorily and psychologically superior sound fields, subjective preference is focused with temporal and spatial objective factors included in signals arriving at both ears. This book consists of following chapters; sound transmission systems, simulation of sound fields, subjective preference judgments, prediction of subjective preference in concert halls, design study, acoustic test techniques for concert halls. (pp.115)

Concert Hall Acoustics (Japanese version)

Ando, Y., Springer-Verlag, Tokyo, 1987

In the appendix, a case study of concert hall is added.
